What happens when our well-intentioned - yet sometimes uncooperative - brain tries to protect us from experiencing harm? Yup, you got it! It's called Stress, also known as Anxiety, and at times it can be quite the nuisance.
.Approach To Treatment:
My approach is heavily based in theoretical application of William Glasser's Choice Theory which indicates the following: Almost all behavior is chosen to satisfy five basic needs which include survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun. While I have studied a range of other theoretical approaches, Choice Theory resonates the most as it offers the opportunity for one to take control of the only thing they can, their own life. My general approach looks at two main ideas: the "What" and the "How." The "What" is heavy in content and focuses on a range of aspects necessary in addressing problems, including a defined set of behavioral characteristics common in those who are struggling. The "How" places greater focus on helping clients to alter both their thinking and behaviors from day one of individual or group sessions and is achieved through introduction of a working model clients can learn then implement in their daily lives.
You are welcome to join me on a journey of knowledge and self-discovery to recognize and appreciate how our brain and bodies have helped us survive the personal challenges and struggles life presents. And then, let's help our brain recognize that, when we are actually safe, we can learn how to direct Anxiety to take a seat until it is next needed. Often times, Anxiety's friends, Depression and Trauma, love to join the party.. Together, we can learn to appreciate them as well, while sending them on their way. Along the way, let's tap into a bit of Grace and Self-Compassion. Let's also identify the multitude of strengths and resources in place, and use them to move from a Fear-Based response, to one of Courage, Curiosity, and Connection.

More than 20 years ago, I worked in the field of construction as a heavy equipment operator and a foreman on a construction crew. If anyone, including my future self, had told me that someday I would change careers and become a therapist and private practitioner I would have bet my life's salary against it. Unable to avoid an internal drive to challenge myself and face my own fears, I embarked on a journey that now, two decades later when you factor in graduate school, has led me to where I am today, having provided therapeutic support to what seems a countless number of individuals, families and groups. The rewarding work continues.
